Does the South Indian film industry need to give us more examples of the prevalent sexism and misogyny? The answer is no, but who’s gonna tell the powerful celebs there? In the latest, Tamil director Mysskin has made a very crass ‘rape’ joke while praising Mammootty’s acting prowess. Yes, that is a connection that could be made as per the filmmaker.
The first teaser of Mammootty’s next film, Peranbu, released today. We all were impressed by it. The audio launch of the movie also took place today. Present were stalwarts like Siddharth, Andrea Jeremiah, Vasanth Ravi, Bharathiraja, KS Ravikumar, Mysskin, Vetrimaran, Bala, Karu Pazhaniappan, Aadhik Ravichandran, AL Vijay and Aram Gopi Nainaar along with Mammootty and Mysskin. Peranbu has been directed by Ram. While interacting with the media Mysskin was all praise for the actor and the director. So much that he joked that if he had been a girl, he’d have raped Mammootty.
Mysskin said, “You can keep watching Mammootty sir throughout this film. If he had been younger and he had been a woman, I might have fallen in love with him. Had I been a girl, I’d have raped him actually. Such a fabulous acting.”
Check out the video below:
You’d think that there would be immediate backlash against Mysskin’s comments but instead, his remark was met with a roaring laughter from people present there. Though, later, the public started criticising him for his crass joke on social media with stern words.
Is this even a worthy manner of appreciating Mammootty? What is so funny in #mysskin saying he would’ve raped #Mammootty had he been a girl? Role reversal?? Its not a compliment to either the mega star or any woman. Also – One can praise an actor without having to decry another. https://t.co/ov2mMMI1s0

#Mysskin‘s distasteful statement doesn’t fall under ‘just a joke’ category. Oh man, rape jokes aren’t funny. CAN NEVER BE. Survivors of sexual violence deserve respect and support. Please don’t tweet, ‘come on, he of course, didn’t really mean it’.

Found myself wincing at #Mysskin‘s rape comment. Sell the movie at its own merit; not with your so-called shock jock antics. Utterly disgusting. #Peranbu #AudioLaunch #பேரன்பு

We can only hope that the industry folks across the country would stop joking about ‘rape’. We can only hope!
